Our surgeons,
though different, are resolute in the care of patients. All are
certified by the American Board of Surgery and have received additional
training in their particular areas of expertise. Known for our high
standards, only surgeons who can maintain a certain level of quality
and service are asked to become a member of Valley Surgical Specialists.

Michael Bruce, MD, FACS

Dr.
Bruce received his general surgical training
in Dallas, Texas, and went on to complete his colorectal fellowship
at
the Ferguson Clinic in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He has been in
private practice in Fresno since 1986, and has also served
as the chief of surgery for Saint Agnes Medical Center. Dr.
Bruce is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and is
one of the founding partners of Valley Surgical Specialists.
Dr.
Bruce is board-certified in both general and Colorectal
surgery.

Mark
Cunningham, M.D., FACS

Dr.
Cunningham received his undergraduate and Graduate degrees
in California. He graduated from St. Louis University Medical
School in 1991. Dr. Cunningham is Board Certified in General
Surgery and Surgical Critical Care. He is a fellow of the American
College of Surgeons. Dr. Cunningham received his surgical training
at the UC San Francisco Medical Education Program in Fresno.
He then served on the faculty as an Assistant Clinical Professor
of Surgery for 5 years.
Dr.
Cunningham’s
special interests include Hernias, Gastrointestinal, Pancreaticobiliary,
Thoracic and Laparoscopic
Surgery.

Dr.
Gardikas completed her undergraduate work at UC San Diego
and later received her medical degree from St. Louis University
in 1987. She received her general surgical training from
Valley Medical Center, UCSF Fresno. Dr. Gardikas is board-certified
in general surgery and is also a fellow of the American College
of Surgeons.
Within the scope of general and videoscopic surgery, her
main interests are diseases of the breast and treatment of
varicose veins.

Deborah Gumina, MD,

Dr.
Gumina Gumina is a graduate of UC Davis and Loyola University - Stritch School of Medicine in Chicago. She completed her surgical training at University Medical Center - UCSF and is board certified.
Her special interests include breast surgery, thyroid/parathyroid procedures and the treatment of venous diseases. Dr Gumina performs venous laser procedures as well as sclerotherapy and surface spider vein laser treatments.

Raised in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, Dr. Lee attended
the University of British Columbia where he completed a Bachelors
of Science in Microbiology before receiving his medical degree
at U.B.C. In 1999, Dr. Lee completed his general surgical
residency at University Medical Center and has completed
additional training in advanced laparoscopic surgery. He
is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons-Canada
and the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Lee is board certified
in general surgery in both Canada and the United States.
Special areas of interest include gastro-intestinal surgery,
colon and rectal surgery, thoracic surgery, hernia surgery,
and laparoscopic surgery.

Michael
M. Maruyama, MD, FACS

Dr.
Maruyama received both his undergraduate degree and medical
degree
from the University of Southern California. He completed
his surgical
training at LAC-USC Medical Center in Los Angeles and has
been in
private practice in Fresno since 1980. He has served as Chief
of Surgery
at Saint Agnes Medical Center and at Clovis Community Hospital.
He is
board-certified and is a fellow of the American College of
Surgeons. Dr.
Maruyama is one of the founders and is currently the managing
partner of
Valley Surgical Specialists.
His
special interests include general, Videoscopic and Vascular surgery.

Dr.
Lawson a native of Fresno, Dr. Lawson graduated from Edison-Computech in 1991. After completing undergraduate work at UC Davis, he obtained a medical degree from UC San Francisco, and completed surgical training at the UC San Francisco Medical Education Program in Fresno. After spending two years on the faculty as an assistant professor of surgery, he joined Valley Surgical Specialists in 2007. He is board certified in General Surgery and is a major in the Army Reserve.
Dr. Lawson's surgical interests include gastro-intestinal, thoracic, and laparoscopic surgery. |
