Do I Need
To Consider Bariatric Surgery?
Morbid Obesity is a scientific term used to describe a very serious
medical condition. Although the causes of morbid obesity are debated,
the result is a situation associated with increased health risks
and quality of life issues. It is quite possible to be healthy and
morbidly obese throughout one's life, but the majority of people
will begin to suffer from one or more conditions such as diabetes,
hypertension, arthritis, heart disease and GERD (severe heartburn).
In addition, this degree of obesity can interfere with an individual's
ability to work or to achieve desired goals. It is unfortunate,
but obesity seems to be one of society's last acceptable forms of
prejudice.
Not everyone who suffers from obesity is a surgical candidate. Not
everyone who is a surgical candidate should have surgery. It is
important that everyone who is considering surgery understands the
different procedures available, the complications and effects of
the procedure performed and have defined goals in mind. Surgery
is a serious step forward and should only be considered after you
have done considerable research and have discussed other options
with your family physician.
