Hernia Surgery

A hernia is usually defined as weakness or defect in the wall of the abdomen, groin, or naval area and can be the result over wear and tear. Hernias most commonly present as a “bulge” under the skin.

Hernias come in all shapes and sizes and, over time will generally increase in size and become more symptomatic. Unless there is a substantive reason for not doing so, most should be repaired. As a result, a number of surgical procedures are available, including Open, Laparoscopic or Robotic assisted. In most case, a hernia operation can be done on an outpatient (no overnight hospitalization) basis.

The type of repair can sometimes be influenced by a history of previous surgery, size, location, and medical condition. An assessment of all factors of risk, level of work activity, disability, and lifestyle are all factors which should be meticulously considered.
